Say What You Mean, Error-Free, in Your Own Voice and Style.

    Get to Know Me.

Mary Payne's background includes a lengthy career in communications and marketing for non-profit groups in Washington, D.C. She also worked in the U.S. Congress. Beginning in 2015, she began an online business as a writer and copy editor for books, newsletters and business papers. She is professionally trained as a master proofreader, and especially enjoys working with book manuscripts.  Also trained in medical transcription, she is familiar with medical terminology. Together with historians, Mary is also working on her own book related to her family's involvement in the Titanic disaster.

    Why Proofread?

Error-free manuscripts get better reviews, sell more books, and attract more readers. Polished business writing is key to successful marketing. Perfect grammar and style mean higher grades for academic papers. A clean resume opens the door to better employment. Good writers rely on proofreading.

    Proofreading is Essential.

    Every Writer Needs a Proofreader.

Even the best writers benefit from a professional, thorough look at their finished documents.  Your proofreader corrects grammar, typos, misspellings, punctuation, comma splices, sentence fragments, run-on sentences, subject-verb disagreement, verb tense, and flow.  This is the final step to perfect your manuscript.

    Frequently Asked Questions and Rates

Unless a project is extremely complex or time sensitive, it is most efficient for both the author and proofreader to charge a per-word rate. My rates are the industry standard of two cents per word. If you prefer, my hourly rate is $25.00. If your document is very complex or needs copy editing services as well as basic proofreading, you can forward a writing sample for a formal quote on the overall project.

After a preliminary consultation, the writer forwards a document or manuscript by email for proofreading in MSWord format. Any special style requests are supplied by the writer (such as a style guide). We can always discuss your expectations, deadlines, and other requirements in advance. The proofread document with suggested changes is returned by email to the writer along with any notes or questions from the proofreader.   We want you to be fully satisfied with the finished product.

Some Notes About Proofreading Versus Copy Editing and More

    PROOFREADING VERSUS COPY EDITING

Proofreading is the final step in editing. A trained proofreader catches spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors and ensures consistency.

Copy editing involves revisions to sentences focusing on good prose, clarity, eliminating awkward phrasing, excess wordiness, and repetition. If your document needs both copy editing and proofreading, we will provide you with a quote for combined services.

    Customized Services

We offer proofreading and editing services to meet your unique requirements. You may only need a one-time document proofread. Perhaps you'd like to go further with full copy editing.  And if you'd like assistance on an ongoing basis, we'd be very happy to work with you.

    Wide Range of Documents

We proofread a wide range of documents including books, newsletters, magazine articles, academic papers, personal documents, business marketing proposals or reports, and more. No matter what you need, we can help.

    A Word About Ai

The introduction of Ai is an exciting development for editors and proofreaders, but the trained eye of a human proofreader remains essential for more nuanced feedback to writers. Programs such as Grammarly can be efficient options for catching basic grammar and spelling errors, but they miss contextual errors, homophones and homonyms, naming errors, and tricky punctuation errors that require extra research. Trained proofreaders also understand the tone and voice of a piece of writing and work to preserve it. For these reasons, proofreaders who know how to use Ai effectively to supplement their expertise are more in demand than ever.
